Jo Adetunji
Twenty-six year old Jo was working as an Editorial/Production Assistant for Public magazine, a monthly Guardian publication for senior public sector executives, civil servants and government.
Educated in Derbyshire, Jo has also worked as an administrator for the management team of Guardian Unlimited, carried out work experience placements with Ecologist and Geographical magazines, and the Financial Times.
Jo will be starting a fast-track course in newspaper journalism at Lambeth College in September. |

Chinwe Akomah
Chinwe is going to study a postgraduate diploma in journalism at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.
With a degree in Politics and Sociology from the University of Warwick, Chinwe has some excellent work experience including placements at the Croydon Guardian, editor of the politics society (at University of Warwick) annual magazine, Footnote, and writer for Smaart magazine.

Ali Ali
As a recent degree graduate from Kingston University, Ali will be staying on to study along side fellow recipient Melissa Allison-Forbes for an MA in Journalism.
Originally from Harrow, Ali has already been offered a trainee position for when he finishes his MA. Ali completed work experience at the Harrow Observer, his own local newspaper, and the editor was impressed by his knowledge and passion for his home town. Fluent in Somali and Arabic, Ali’s other experience includes working as the entertainment editor of the university newspaper, The River. |

Melissa Allison-Forbes
Currently working as a sales assistant in WHSmith, Melissa will be studying alongside fellow recipient Ali Ali for an MA in journalism at Kingston University.
Melissa, who has recently completed a degree in Journalism and Sociology at Kingston, has completed work experience placements at a number of publications including The Voice, Pride magazine and the Wembley Observer. Melissa was also deputy features editor for the university newspaper, The River.

Duncan Bick
Originally from Melrose in Scotland, Duncan worked as an English teacher in China for 11 months when he completed his history degree at the University of Glasgow in 2005. Duncan’s work experience includes guest editor of Well? magazine in Edinburgh and as a cover journalist for the Tweeddale Press.
Duncan is one of three recipients going to the University of Sheffield where he will study for a postgraduate diploma in print journalism

Kim Carmichael
As a part of her degree course at the University of Stirling, Kim spent a year studying at the University of Kansas in America. While there, Kim
worked within the marketing department of a restaurant chain as well as a journalist for the university’s newspaper.
Kim will start an MA in journalism at the University of Sunderland in September. |

Jennifer Coombes
Twenty-one year old Jenny will start a postgraduate diploma in print journalism at the University of Sheffield in September.
Hailing from Birkenhead, Jenny has gained some excellent work experience since finishing school including placements at Wirral News and the Birmingham Post and Mail. Jenny started an English degree at the University of Sheffield in 2004, where she became heavily involved with the university’s newspaper, The Steel Press.
It was Jenny’s excellent experience and obvious dedication to a career in journalism that made her successful in her application to the fund. |

Karen Fazackerly
Since completing her degree in Audio Visual Media with Public Relations at the University of Central Lancashire in 2003, Karen has worked freelance for a number of local and regional newspapers including the Lancashire Telegraph and Northern Echo Newspapers.
Currently working at the Acrington Observer as a freelance reporter, Karen has had numerous articles printed which include match reports, articles involving a number of players and press conferences. She was the only female football match summariser in the UK to work for a commercial radio station, reporting for the full 90 minutes on Accrington Stanley matches.
Karen will complete a fast-track course at Darlington College and it’s her evident passion for the industry that made it an easy decision to award her a bursary.

Shane Gladstone
Originating from Liverpool, Shane will start at academic year course in newspaper journalism at Liverpool Community College in September.
With a detailed portfolio of published work, including Dazed & Confused and Clash magazines, Shane is currently working for Microsoft based in Liverpool as an editorial assistant.
Shane says that he is inspired by good journalism, particularly Tom Wolfe, John Snow and Neville Brody, and he impressed the bursary panel with his diverse range of journalism interests.

Kevin Mudie
With a degree International Relations & Russian from the University of Sussex, Kevin has lived in France, Russia, Bulgaria and the United States.
As a single parent, Kevin is keen to pursue his dream of becoming a sub-editor now that his son is starting college. He will be the first bursary recipient to attend the newly accredited subbing course at the Journalist Works in Brighton.

Daniel Smith
Twenty-one year old Daniel is awaiting his result from his degree in English and Related Literature at the University of York before starting his postgraduate diploma in journalism at the Scottish Centre for Journalism Studies.
Daniel has contributed news stories and reviews to a number of publications while at university including two student newspapers, society newsletters and campus magazines. He was also elected as deputy music editor of York Vision, the university’s newspaper, in 2006.

Oluchi Ugwu
Born in England and raised in Nigeria, Oluchi has lived in the UK for four years during which time she has focused on her further education.
With a degree in culture, media and communications, Oluchi will go on to study for a postgraduate diploma in journalism at the University of Sheffield. Her work experience includes working as a sub-editor for Deeper magazine where she subbed the creative writing section; wrote short stories, reviews, attended conferences; and was also actively involved in promotion and distribution of the magazine. |
